titleGFR Covered Student: GSR

Select GSR from the drop-down if your student has a GSR appointment, or multiple GSR appointments, that total 25% or more for an entire quarter.

Students covered by the Graduate Funding Reform, with a GSR appointment, or multiple GSR appointments, that total 25% or more are eligible for a fee remission (see GSR Tuition and Fee Remission (GSRTF).  The fee remission automatically includes tuition, student services fee, campus fees (100% of campus fees, as of Fall 2023), mandatory health insurance, and nonresident supplemental tuition1.  After the first year of enrollment as a domestic student or a Permanent Resident, NRST is no longer automatically covered.

Image RemovedFee Remission Entry Instructions_ Fees Automatically Covered - 24-25.jpegImage Added

Link to this chart.

Ui expand
titleWhy do we need to include the anticipated percent effort (FTE) for Combo appointments?

We cannot pull this information into the tool, as some entries in UCPath are not made before the fee deadline. Instead, the notes will assist FSU in auditing the initial remission payment posted to the student's account (this will not affect the calculation of the proportional split when costs are posted to financial ledgers).

Ui expand
titleCan I cover the $100 Document Fee or $100 Visa Administration Fee?

Yes. Departments may submit a fee payment request on the Fellowships tab to cover these administrative fees.  The GSR/IA Remission tab is not configured to cover these fees as part of the remission payment request.

Ui expand
titleHow can I pay for NRST for my student?

Departments may opt to pay the balance of campus fees and/or NRST for students with a fee remission, for whom the fees are not automatically covered via a fee payment on the Fellowships tab of the FRST in the following scenarios:

  • DO Covered Student: IA

  • DO Covered Student: Combo, GSR <25%3

In all other scenarios where the balance of fees and/or NRST are not automatically covered, departments should use the checkbox on the GSR/IA Remission tab.

Ui expand
titleWhy is it required that NRST (for GFR Covered Students) be entered on the GSR/IA Remission tab?

Please see “Why is IATF charged differently than GSRTF?

Ui expand
titleWhy is it recommended that NRST (for DO Covered Students) be entered on the GSR/IA Remission tab?

The recommendation reduces the potential of two separate overpayment pain points for students holding combo appointments:

  1. Overpayment to the student's billing account

  2. Duplicate coverage of a single expenditure on financial ledgers:

(pardon our collab dust as we clarify the explanation of these two issues!)

Ui expand
titleCancelling Requests

When cancelling requests on the GSR/IA Remission tab, please uncheck any checked boxes.  This will prevent miscommunication and remove the risk of residual payments left on the student account.

Policy

Ui expand

No.  An exception request to cover NRST for a student for whom NRST is not automatically covered is no longer required.

Ui expand
titleWhat titles are eligible for fee remissions?

titleHistorical Info

"Balance of campus fees" or "balance of fees" or "BoF" refers to the balance remaining of the campus fees not covered by the ASE Partial Fee Remission.  The ASE Partial Fee Remission, which is described in the UAW Academic Student Employees Unit contract, provides $100 towards the campus fees.  The total campus fees assessed at UC San Diego for AY 22-23 is $350.33.  After the $100 is applied, the balance remaining, or the "balance of campus fees", is $250.33 (see Fee Payment Information for Academic Student Employees).  For students covered by a Department Offer, students are responsible for paying this balance.  Departments may request to cover the balance for students with a fee remission, in the following scenarios:

  • DO Covered Student: IA

  • DO Covered Student: Combo, GSR <25%3
