Upgrade Plan

Tableau releases new features, bug fixes and more several times of year as Tableau Upgrades.  It is important for UCSD to upgrade their Tableau environments at least once a year, depending on stability and contents of each upgrade, in order to take advantage of the new capabilities and keep current with security features.  ITS-BIA will communicate upgrade contents and schedules via email to the Tableau Community of Practice mail list in Emma.  Please email busintel@ucsd.edu to be added to this mail list.

Tableau developer report testing at the beginning of the upgrade is critical to a timely and successful upgrade.

All upgrades for Tableau occur in place. High level, the strategy for all upgrades is:

  1. ITS-BIA will review the upgrade in our sandbox prior to planning an upgrade of PROD
  2. Once ITS-BIA has reviewed the upgrade in the sandbox, Tableau Report Developers will be allowed into the sandbox for testing
  3. Allow at least one week for review of the upgrade in the sandbox environment.
    1. Report developers are expected to review new features and test their existing content for any issues.
    2. Issues should be reported to busintel@ucsd.edu with the subject "Tableau Upgrade"
    3. At the end of the week a GO/ROLLBACK determination will be made.
    4. GO – the upgrade is applied to PROD over the weekend.
    5. ROLLBACK – the upgrade is rolled back from sandbox.
  4. Upgrade the PROD environment.
      1. GO determination based directly on your feedback.

Desktop

Upgrade

Your Tableau desktop version must match the Tableau server version in order to publish your workbook.

If you have installed the new version of Tableau desktop but not removed the old version of Tableau then your computer will default your workbook to the version with which is was created when you double click the workbook file.  If you created the workbook in the old version, when you attempt to publish the workbook you will get an error message.

Short term fix: Double click the new version of Tableau.  Click on the File menu > Open > navigate to the workbook you want to publish.  From here Tableau will upgrade your workbook.

Long term resolution:  Remove the older version of Tableau from your desktop.  Contact your help desk if needed.

Testing

Things to look for when testing:

  • Can you sign like a customer would?
  • Can you navigate the environment?
  • Can you open your report?
  • Do the filters work as expected?
  • Do the links within your report work as expected?
  • Can you publish to the upgraded environment?

Upgrade Issues

Tableau Error:  You do not have permissions to publish to any projects.

Resolution:  Ensure that your Tableau desktop version is exactly the same as the Tableau server.  KB0033734
