About

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program gives U.S. citizens the opportunity to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad. The mission of the program is to create ties in foreign countries by promoting mutual understanding of cultures abroad through exchange.

The 2023-2024 Fulbright U.S. Student competition is now open!

At a Glance

  • 2023-2024 Fulbright Application Portal is now open; if you plan to apply through UC San Diego, please submit the Intent to Apply Intake Form by July 6, 2022

  • Depending on the country, awardees will stay in their host country from six to twelve months

  • More than 3,600 candidates are recommended by 157 subsections of the National Screening Committee, composed of 457 senior faculty or field of study professionals

  • Approximately 8,000 grants are awarded annually

  • Types of Awards

    • Open Study - Propose a graduate degree program at an accredited university abroad of your choice.

    • Research - Create your own research-oriented project. This award will not result in a degree like the open study award.

    • English Teaching Assistantships Teach English abroad award in one of 140 countries.

    • Special Programs - Depending on the country, there are specialized awards offered like National Geographic, Internship programs with special focuses on public health, public policy, etc.

  • Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States of America at the time of application. Permanent residents are not eligible.
