Overview

Effective Winter 2023: The new UAW Academic Student Employee (ASE)/BX and Graduate Student Researcher (GSR)/BR contracts do not guarantee Nonresident Supplemental Tuition (NRST) for union-covered employees.  The contract instead memorialized the current practices that existed at each campus at the time of ratification.  For UC San Diego, that includes a practice of post-candidacy waiver period, Graduate Student Researcher Tuition and Fees (GSRTF), and the coverage for Graduate Funding Reform (GFR)-covered students. After the first year of enrollment, there is an expectation that domestic nonresident students will have established California residency and will therefore not be assessed NRST. Domestic nonresident students who do not establish residency will not receive NRST coverage.  Departments may opt to cover this cost for their students.
