titleCreating and using Components

Components are useful to group and tag things in JIRA. Think of these as "tags". Components are project specific, so the options will only show up in the project they are created in (labels on the other hand are universal). There are two ways to create components:

  1. Creating components from the components sidebar
  2. Creating components on the fly (note: At least 1 component must exist for this option to activate. If no components exist it will just say "None" and you must use option 1)

titleCreating and using FixVersion

Versions are useful to tie to milestones or product releases. You can put versions on things like Tasks or Epics and generate nice reports and filters. Similar to components, they are project specific (so you should make them descriptive). Similar to components, there are two ways to create versions.

  1. Creating versions from the release sidebar
  2. Creating versions on the fly (note: At least 1 version must exist for this option to activate. If a version doesn't exist, it will just say "None" and you must create it via Option 1.

titleRequesting Project Creations

Note: This is a process, specific to UCSD ITS.

In order to request a new project, you must fill out a project record and create a project charter. Projects should have a start and end date. If you have questions about creating a project record, you can find more information.

To create a project record, you want to Click create and select ITS Portfolio as the project and then fill out the necessary information. The biggest difference between requesting a project vs a service operational project is defined on the project record. For projects, you select the "Work type" to be Discretionary and "Project type" to be Project.

titleRequesting Service Operational Project Creations

Note: This is a process, specific to UCSD ITS.

In order to request a new service operational project, you must fill out a project record and define your service line and service offerings. If you have questions about defining your service line and service offerings, you can find more information here.

To create a project record, you want to click create and select ITS Portfolio as the project and then fill out the necessary information. The biggest difference between requesting a project vs a service operational project is defined on the project record. For service operational projects, you select the "Work type" to be Mandatory and "Project Type" to be Service

titleSaving Filters

Once you have mastered searching for issues, you may want to save it so you can use it in other places (tempo, Jira boards, widgets on the dashboard, confluence macros, subscriptions, etc). Just make sure you set the correct permissions so people can also use it.
