Alfred P. Sloan Foundation University Center for Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM) Program

Program Description

In 2015, UC San Diego was designated a University Center of Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM) through a generous grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. UC San Diego is committed to be fully inclusive and supportive of all students, and believes that a diverse graduate student body enhances the quality of the educational experience for all students.

The UCEM provided financial and professional support to accelerate and catalyze the success of doctoral students. The Sloan Scholar Fellowship was awarded to incoming graduate students in the Division of Physical Sciences and the Jacobs School of Engineering.

Our final cohort of Sloan Scholars began their graduate study in Fall 2023 and we are no longer accepting nominations.

Award Information for Current Scholars

The Sloan Scholar award includes a stipend of $40,000 over four years, over and above any financial support offered by the student's graduate program. Additionally, students received a $1,500 transitional payment plus $500 professional development allowance.

Sloan Scholars attended a one-month transition program (Sloan Predoctoral Institute) before the start of their graduate study.

Sloan Scholars were granted SHORE housing spots.
