Frequently Asked Questions
Why log my time?
Logging time is necessary for:
Audit - To ensure university funds are used as budgeted, audit will review the hours logged for each project, especially as relates to backfill funding requests and time logged by consultants.
Project Planning - To be able to determine if milestones will be hit and there are enough people to do the planned project work, having good data on how many hours people have logged to the project is critical.
Leadership Visibility - Reports are reviewed by leadership each week detailing where time is being logged to the project for the entire project team, to ensure visibility to bottlenecks, where people could be overloaded, and areas where additional hours are needed
When do I need to log time?
Please log your time at least weekly (or daily) as this makes it easier to remember which tasks you worked on. Setting a reminder and getting in the habit of logging time also helps ensure tasks are kept current, so that Jira gives an accurate picture of the state of the project. Don't let your time entry fall behind! The further back you have to go the harder it is to remember what you were doing on a given day.
What if the task I'm charging time to is assigned to someone else?
That's perfectly fine - Jira only allows one assignee per task, but multiple people can charge time against it.
Oh snap, the task I need to log time to is closed!
No worries! You can log time to closed tasks in Jira - Jira could not care less what status the task is in when you log time, logging time to closed tasks is acceptable.
