20210224 - New RAH-AwardDetail-View
Hello Award Report Developers - As mentioned in the Research Community of Practice, we've been collecting your feedback and working to optimized the underlying tables for the "Research Administration - Developer package - Award - KUALI" view.
We are also aware of your need to have our team deliver on more views that blend information across hubs, one of the primary purposes of using the Activity Hubs. While we have been colloquially referencing our current deliverable as RAH, the underlying structure has actually not matched our "plug and play" standards for activity hubs and that mismatch has caused delays in delivering on our blending promise.
The good news is that we have completed our first step towards turning RAH into a true Activity Hub by moving the underlying tables into our standard Activity Hub design layout. These changes, however, come with aggregation strategy changes in Tableau. In order to allow you time to transition to this updated view and to align our deliverable to our Activity Hub standard, we will be releasing it as a new data source in Tableau called "RAH-AwardDetail-View". We have added the granularity information to the RAH-AwardDetail-View Quick Start Guide to support the Tableau adjustments that will need to occur.
Because there are critical enhancements you all are waiting for (specifically the Clinical Trials and Financial Description fields), we are going to begin by just delivering this new view to Tableau this release as the conversion in Cognos is not yet available.
For those of you using Tableau:
- You will continue to see the "Research Administration - Developer Package - Award - KUALI" data source.
- This data source is unchanged and DOES NOT contain any enhancements.
- This data source will not be enhanced going forward.
- We have not determined a timeline for retiring this data source at this time and will work with you all on what will work in that regard.
- All enhancements can be found in the new "RAH-AwardDetail-View"
- The default aggregation behavior will aggregate at the lowest level per view, which means the report developer will see inflated totals until they create what Tableau calls a Level of Detail calculation in their report.
- Please refer to the RAH-AwardDetail-View Quick Start Guide for more detail.
- Updated "Research Administration - Developer Package - IP- KUALI" and "Research Administration - Developer Package - PD - KUALI" data sources are also part of this deliverable. These will convert to "RAH-%" views in future releases.
For those of you using Cognos:
- You will continue to see the "Research Administration - Developer Package - Award - KUALI" package.
- This package DOES include the new Clinical Trials and Financial Description fields, but does not utilize the new underlying structure.
- You will see the "RAH-AwardDetail-View" package in our March release.
- Similar to Tableau, the existing "Research Administration - Developer Package - Award - KUALI" will persist for an undetermined time period, but will not be enhanced further.
- Updated "Research Administration - Developer Package - IP- KUALI" and "Research Administration - Developer Package - PD - KUALI" packages are also part of this deliverable. These will convert to "RAH-%" views in future releases.
In the future, we will release an RAH-Award-View where all items have been aggregated to the Award+Sequence Number level. At that point, our recommendation will be that you start a new report with RAH-Award-View and then switch to RAH-AwardDetail-View only if you need more detail in order to take advantage to the optimized performance.

Subject: RE: RAH enhancements - UAT available - due February 16
Importance: High
Good morning all,
As many of you may have noticed, we unfortunately were not able to move these updates to production yesterday as planned. Changes in the Award view functionality were identified during the UAT period and we are working hard on a strategy and communication plan for how this update will be rolled out to assure there are no unexpected changes in your Tableau deliverables.
We currently expect to deliver this release to production next week.
As we continue to refine our underlying structures, we move into a state where we are better able to facilitate blending of RAH data with other hubs and the changes made this release cycle are a significant move in that direction. However, as we do that we are taking precautions to assure that your existing content continues to function as expected. To that end, if you have any unreported findings from the UAT period please let us know as soon as possible so that we are sure to address them in our final rollout.
We sincerely apologize for the delay, and look forward to getting this release to production very soon.
Thanks for your patience and support!

Subject: RAH enhancements - UAT available - due February 16
Hello RAH Developers - We are excited to release a number of enhancements for you to test between now and end of day February 16. If you find an issue, please email busintel@ucsd.edu right away so we can address it prior to the Thursday release.
How to test the new enhancements:
- Cognos: Use the packages in Cognos DEV > Research Administration > Research Administration Packages - UAT to build your report and select Hana QA. Do not select Hana Prod as the report will fail. Using Hana QA will allow you to see the below enhancements with Production data.
- Tableau: Sign into Tableau on your Tableau desktop tool and open your report. Add a new data source with the same name and -QA at the end of the title. Using this data source will allow you to see the below enhancements with Production data.
- Hana QA: data in Hana QA is production Kuali data loaded daily, just like in Hana PROD.
If you find an issue, please include in your email to busintel@ucsd.edu the following:
- What browser are you using?
- What environment are you using? Cognos DEV, QA or PROD?
- What data source / package are you using?
- What results were you expecting?
