Visiting Graduate Student

A Visiting Graduate Student is a non-UC, pre-doctoral graduate student (PhD, MA, MS, MBA, or MD) pursuing research at UC San Diego related to their degree program at their home institution.  Appointment of this title requires prior approval by the Dean of the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs.   • Non-salaried visiting Graduate Students must be entered in UCPath.

  • A Visiting Graduate Student's primary work location must be UC San Diego campus.

As of 2025: 

  1. The health insurance form has been updated. Please have applicants use this new form, also available on the UCSD VGS webpage.

  2. VGS applicants must complete the SB 791/AB 810 disclosure process. Jotform should be used for the VGS title. (Updated 1/2026)

  3. We have updated the GSR salary scales in the Financial Support section - this is for reference purposes to ensure that departments who plan to host salaried VGS are not exceeding the amount paid to their own students.
